Electronic ID demand fall short with only 8,200 applications
The launch of Cyprus's electronic identity (eID) at the end of January was expected to boost digital access, but uptake has been slow, with only 8,200 applications received by this week. The first 30,000 eIDs are free, and another 70,000 are available for €15. Of the 8,200 applications, 4,500 were submitted in the first two days, with slow growth since. Only 2,100 eIDs have been issued. The eID, managed by JCC Payment Systems, allows electronic signing of documents and accessing government services online. It differs from the "Digital Citizen" app, which focuses on digital document storage. Cyprus's eID scheme, approved by the EU, adheres to strict security standards, unlike Germany's state-managed system. By 2026, all EU countries must implement electronic IDs. In Cyprus, eligibility is limited to citizens with biometric ID documents. The process involves submitting a biometric ID and application form for review. Key takeaways include limited uptake, pricing incentives, current use cases, and non-mandatory status. The digital divide is evident, with younger people adopting eIDs more readily, highlighting the need for support for older individuals, especially in rural areas.
